MeBoy is a Gameboy emulator for mobile phones (which means you can use it to play Gameboy games on a mobile phone). It works on phones with support for Java Micro Edition, specifically MIDP 2.0. Your phone manufacturer's web site can tell you if this includes your phone.

MeBoy supports both Gameboy and Gameboy Color games, and with version 2.0 you can even play your games with sound!

With MeBoy you can also save your progress at any time, whether the game itself supports saving or not. Any number of saved games can be stored concurrenly (only limited by your phone's available storage space). Since version 2.0, you can share your saved games with your friends via Bluetooth.

We started working on MeBoy in 2005 after I wondered why there was no way of running Gameboy games on my (at that time) new and shiny mobile phone. Determined to rectify the situation, I started work on MeBoy by porting JavaBoy to J2ME (JavaBoy is a Java-based Gameboy emulator for PCs, written by Neil Millstone). The direct port could only emulate a single frame per second! Lots and lots of optimization later, MeBoy was ready for release. Luckily, it is also getting faster every time a new phone model is released!

Make sure you have Java installed on your computer, version 1.5 or later.
Download MeBoyBuilder.jar for version 1.6.
Run MeBoyBuilder.jar by double-clicking.
Press the "Add ROM" and select a ROM file. Repeat for all games you want to add (some phones do not accept very large ".jar" files though).
Press the "Finish" button. The file MeBoy.jar is created for you (in the same directory as MeBoyBuilder.jar, or your browser's default directory).
Copy MeBoy.jar to your phone. If the phone accepted the file, you're done! Otherwise, read on:
Some phones want a ".jad" file, which is a text file with info about the ".jar" file. MeBoy.jad is created for this reason. (If your phone accepted MeBoy.jar, you do not need MeBoy.jad and can safely throw it away.)

rogram is without it's share of bugs, here are the notable (known) ones for MeBoy, as of version 2.0:
Some games are not drawn correctly, in particular some graphics that should be "in front of" other graphics are instead drawn behind. This is generally the result of certain shortcuts used to speed up emulation by sacrificing accuracy. (This issue does not exist when using the "Advanced graphics" setting, but on the other hand that mode is too slow for many phones.)
MeBoy does not support multiplayer games (using the link cable).
If you force-quit MeBoy (for instance by holding down the "back" or "hang up" button), MeBoy will not save your progress, and your savegames can revert to a previous version. To properly exit MeBoy, select "Exit [game]" in the in-game menu, and then "Exit" in the main MeBoy menu.
MeBoy currently does not support Gameboy Advance games. The Gameboy Advance is a completely different architecture from the Gameboy and Gameboy Color, and has much higher performance demands.
Some games will not run. There is an incomplete compatibility list for MeBoy, and the list for JavaBoy can be found here. Most games will either work with both or neitheremulator, but there are exceptions.
Some Sony Ericsson phones (including K700i) will misinterpret button presses when the joystick is held in some direction. This means only buttons 5, 7 and 9 can be reliably used together with the joystick, and the other buttons work "sometimes". (This is not really a MeBoy issue per se, but it is a limitation when playingGameboy games.

Speed

The primary reason MeBoy is slower than most Gameboy emulators for Symbian phones is that it's an emulator (for Gameboy) inside an emulator (for Java). There is a lot of overhead in each step, and MeBoy can only control and optimize the Gameboy-to-Java step. (On the flip side, using Java means MeBoy can run on non-Symbian phones.)

MeBoy has a performance issue with games fading the screen, since this wreaks havoc on the image drawing code. (This issue does not exist when using the "Advanced graphics" setting, but on the other hand that mode is too slow for many phones.) Emulating theGameboy Color is also much more demanding than the regular Gameboy, because the Gameboy Color has a much faster CPU, and also larger RAM and of course a more advanced graphics chip. Games fading the screen are also much more common onGameboy Color.

However, MeBoy is much faster than MJavaBoy (which is another JavaBoy port), and it plays Gameboy games adequately on many recent phone
